The world is made up simply of energy. That is right … what causes the beats in our heart, what makes our minds work, what gives us those feelings is simply energy. Buddha talks about enlightenment and Buddhist Monks will spend this and the next life time learning how to become enlightened or more importantly how to ascend our spiritual body into the next.

So, what is death?

I have seen many people die around me, both family and friends. I watched the transition of my own grandfather from being a strong fit man to one that literally withered before my eyes. Yet within the pain comes a reality that as we become closer to death we also have the chance to make the transition from this form to another. Whether it is a form that lives within us or one that occurs on the moment we die, none of us know till the day it happens.

You know the really cool part about all of this. All of the critics no matter who they are and what they think they know can say with 100% certainty as to what happens not just when we die but when we meet the point of enlightenment and ascension.

It amazes me that as every person gets older, regardless of their beliefs, regardless of how hard nose they are or whether they believed in God or not, they all search for that point of knowing that there is something out there greater. Our own mortality and I guess our own arrogance wants to know we are going to go some where greater and that what we have done will continue on. Every single person I have seen or met believe as they get older, in that greater being or at least the hope there is something greater out there and that this is not the beginning and the end. I have even seen some of the most powerful men in this world, mellow as their own frailty hits them they search out for that spiritual being to help them in their transition.

I have heard many critics across the planet criticize the Buddhist monks who have dedicated their lives to path of enlightenment. I have even heard those same critics on the death bed of monks sit and laugh at them saying how foolish they were to have dedicated their lives to such foolish conquests. That there lives have been nothing but a waster of time. But have they …

This is a question that only you and I will be able to answer the day we reach enlightenment but what a journey it will be…

So, what is the starting point in the path to enlightenment …

The path to enlightenment is an exploration of yourself and who you are. Most Buddhists will start this path through prayer and meditation. In fact, regardless of what you call it, prayers or praying, it is all a form of meditation. This meditation (or prayers) are designed to take you to that state in which you get in touch which your feelings and belief with something greater. It is designed to break you away from your state of being.

Many people recommend, including many of the Buddhist Monk leaders, that we should meditate for a minimum of 20 minutes a day, preferably longer to help relax but as you begin to study what meditation is all about and the forms of meditation, you will find that this length of time will be know where near enough. You will find that meditation is about that search for enlightenment and the path towards this thing we call ascension. You will feel sensations and experiences you never expected, it will also open up your ability to change your own life.

Meditation is the facilitator in helping you reach inside of you. See without meditation you can not reach to your inner soul to explore your inner self. Essentially, to break the bounds we have with the physical world.

All right, so this is getting spooky or the things hippies talk about. Let us try this …

Think of a song you really really like that gives you goose pimples, where it uplifts you and you feel the energy surging through your body, that you feel happy, search for those emotions … got one … well one of the songs that does that for me is “A Groovy Kind of Love” by Phil Collins. Now start off by putting your song on and listening to it. Sit on the ground, cross your legs, breath slowly and listen to that song in its entirety. Block out all the other noise around you, simply focuses on the words as your mind clears.

What do you feel …

Let go of the words … do not focus on them … focus on your inner self. Can you still feel the goose pimples, can you feel the energy surging around your body. Okay, so now imagine this, being anywhere in the world, simply stopping, without any music or tools, meditating, searching within your inner self and feeling those exact feelings. Being able to create and control those feelings on your command. That is right; using meditation will help you on that path. How cool would that be?

Being able to do just this simple task is the first step you will take in your path to enlightenment. It is about being able to control you inner self, letting go and eventually being able to break the bounds of the physical world. That takes practice, study but more so, a lot of experimenting. There is nothing anyone but you who can do this. This path is within you.

A word of warning … the path to enlightenment will take a lifetime to master … and probably a few after. Look at the Dalai Lama, he is still on his path to enlightenment, and many lifetimes on. But hey, what a journey it will be. Imagine what you can do … imagine what lies on your path to life, your future, your eternity.

Brainwave Entrainment Anomalies of Autism – Questions For Scientists and Parapsychologists

Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

My work with many students with severe autism has significantly expanded my concept of reality. These are truly amazing souls who have much to teach us about consciousness. Please begin to listen!

I have engaged in thought, word and picture sending, joining, and possibly receiving for many years. I can quantitatively prove that a transfer occurs when I am sending. Joining and receiving is qualitative. Although I believe it is a spiritual or subconscious connection, I am hopeful there is a way to measure what areas of the brain are being activated during the process.

This phenomenon is apparent in Facilitated Communication-FC, Supported Typing, and Rapid Prompting Method-RPM. agent dependent typing- the person with severe autism hits the keys independently or selects answers from a field of choices, but needs a person who serves as a catalyst in his proximity.

I have many unanswered questions. I believe that pursuing the answers would enhance our understanding of consciousness and also help us accommodate individuals with autism. These phenomenal individuals are being under utilized. Using an EEG on the facilitator and the non-verbal typist would be a good place to start.

These are some of the questions I would like to see investigated:

1. Do our brain wave frequencies entrain during ‘thought joining’ often present in facilitated communication, creating a sympathetic resonance?

2. What areas of the brain are being activated during the exchange? Are brain wave patterns in sync during interactions? Is it similar to the entrainment of brain waves that is seen between energy healers and patients?

3. Is ‘joining’ occurring at a subconscious level? Does it assist in tapping into an emanating universal field of knowledge in addition to the knowledge base of the agent? Does adhering to the vibration of the facilitator help the brain filter material? Does it help the person with severe autism experience typical perceptual reality through the perceptual and sensory system of the agent?

4. Is it possible that two distinct frequencies blended together form a third frequency? (Think of binaural beats or chemical changes) How does this shared frequency affect communicative output?

5. Can syncing through the FC process be compared to the synchronization of coupled oscillators? Does this also help to explain group resonance? Is this why students remain calm and engaged around staff that stays present and focussed on the material?

6. Does the facilitator/agent serve as a catalyst, providing the stimulus necessary for severely autistic people with minimal language skills to access a response? Are his high-speed fleeting thoughts and chaotic flow being entrained by magnetic signals of the agent? Could these radiations produce the telepathic receiving experiences by acting on the temporal lobe?

7. Are the brain waves of the facilitator and the non verbal autistic person syncing at the same frequency and length? Are the autistic person’s brainwaves lengthening and slowing down?

8. Is the right brain being stimulated during the connection? Is that why the language used when paired with an agent is sometimes prosaic?

9. Does aligning with the rhythm of the facilitator help some some severe individuals perform movements in a more synchronized manner? Does the facilitator help the individual attune to the frequency of the earth? (Schuman waves 7.8 -8 hz. Is this why the person hitting the keys, at least temporarily seems more organized?

10. Is the pineal gland primarily hyper active in kids with severe autism causing them to easily let go of ego based consciousness? Is it hypo active in higher functioning individuals resulting in rigid concrete behavior? Might this also be true of the amygdala? How might the pineal gland and/or the amygdala be affected by the joining process?

11. What role if any does the reticular activating system play?

And the list goes on! Please look beyond the phrasing of some of my questions. I am not an academic, scientist, or researcher. My paradigm is based on observation of my personal experience. I have videos available for viewing by qualified scientists or researchers.

Mary Ann Harrington MA
Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain? ?requency following?response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

This ?requency following?response of brainwave entrainment can be seen in action with those prone to epilepsy. If a strobe flashes at their seizure frequency, the brain will ?ntrain?to the flashing light, resulting in a seizure.

On the positive side, this same mechanism is commonly used to induce many brainwave states; such as a trance, enhanced focus, relaxation, meditation or sleep induction. The brainwave entrainment effectively pushes the entire brain into a certain state.

Brainwave entrainment works for almost everyone. It is a great way to lead your mind into states that you might usually have difficulty reaching, allowing you to experience what those states feel like.

THE HYPE
There is a lot of marketing hype around brainwave entrainment. It is sold with promises of increasing IQ, promoting weight loss, ?ind-tripping? enhancing creativity, concentration, inducing spiritual states and more.

While these claims are not entirely true, they are not altogether false either. In practice, the claims are based on an overly-simplistic view of how the brain and the brainwaves function.
THE RUB
People are very seldom deficient in a certain brainwave type in all areas of their brain. Usually the distribution is much spottier, with an excess in one area and a deficiency in another.

We are all different, especially when it comes to the distribution of our brainwaves. Boosting a certain brainwave state may be beneficial for one person, and emotionally uncomfortable for another. Without knowing each person? starting position, entrainment can be rather ?it and miss?

If brainwave entrainment leaves you with unwanted side-effects (see below) or discomfort, you?e probably encouraging a range of brainwaves that are already excessive in some area of your brain. The way around this is to get a brain map to see what your brain? strengths and weaknesses are, and see what (if any) brainwaves could use some encouragement.

We don’t take baths enough nowadays.

We’ve turned into such a busy culture that a five-minute shower might be all that we can squeeze in to our crazy, manic day. We wash the stinky parts, and we’re out of there. It’s all about the business of hygiene, and not much more. Taking a shower is goal oriented and not necessarily all that pleasurable.

And when we do op out for a shower, we are missing out on something that could bring us great pleasure.

The wonderful, soothing, relaxing experience of a bath.

Listening to Isochronic Tones, a form of brainwave entrainment that alters the frequency of your brainwaves with a single beat, will take the already awesome experience of bathing, to another level. The brain naturally mimics any repeated, rhythmic pattern and soon alters its state of consciousness to match those pulses. Isochronic tones introduce a specific pulse to the brain that encourages a whole brain experience.

The Virtues Of Taking A Bath

A bath relaxes your entire body. Every little ache and pain is enveloped in a warm, amniotic-like fluid that soothes them away. You lie back and let go.

You get to reflect on your own naked body. It’s really not that bad, is it? You have your good parts. Lit candles around the bathtub will give your body a nice, soft glow.

The warm water, especially if you use bubbles, massages your skin, leaving you feeling like you’ve been touched all over. We don’t get touched very much in our busy day. The bath resurrects this sense and you feel like you’re being hugged. Baths are particularly good if you’ve got no one to hug you.

If you add oils and perfumes, you activate another sense that gets ignored, the sense of smell. Many different aromas can change your brainwaves into a meditative and relaxed state.

When the water starts to cool, you turn on the tap, and the sound of the water falling into the soapy tub water, is deep and rhythmic, and again, triggers your relaxation response.

You can read, watch t.v., or even have a conversation, on the phone or in person, if you’re up for it. Heck, you can even text somebody if you’re so inclined.

And something you can’t do while taking a shower is drink wine, or eat chocolate (well, I guess you can eat chocolate in the shower, but it isn’t the same). You certainly can imbibe while you’re luxuriating in a bath.

Taking a bath is an event. Taking a shower is a chore.

Bathing incorporates all five senses, and maybe a sixth when you add Isochronic Tones to the mix.

How Using Isochronic Tones Enhances Taking Bath

You don’t need headphones, so you can play the recording as background music.
Because isochronic tones encourage the firing of both hemispheres of the brain, experiencing all the sensations in the bath will feel even more 3-D.
Your senses will run at a much higher, sensitive level.
The water will feel silkier, warmer…more soothing.
The smell of the bath oil will envelop your entire being, not just your olfactory system.
The sound of water running into the tub will sound like a rushing waterfall falling into a deep canyon. You’ll feel like you’re in some exotic location.
The candle light reflected in the bubbles will hypnotize you and transport you to another dimension.
And the taste of the wine, well, that’ll be an experience all on its own.

Taking a bath while listening to isochronic tones will either relax your mind, body and soul, or have the opposite effect of invigorating you.

It’s all about what you intend for your experience. Isochronic tones will take that intention, and magnify it.

You just might never take another shower again…except to wash the stinky parts.

Meditation happiness is paramount to achieve especially in today’s times when we can be easily affected by the most minuscule things happening around us.

But achieving this mediation happiness is a tough nut to crack. There are so many distractions that come in the sacred path that leads us to the glowing and energizing spirit that mediation shows.

Our lifestyle, thinking process, values, desires and goals, all of these and even more can be easily deterred from the right direction. The sad part is that we realize this when the things have gone way out of our hands. And for this the practice of creating meditation happiness in our life is very essential.

Therefore, here are some methods that will help us to create this wonderful phenomenon of meditation happiness and give some space to it in our lives. They are:

Self-acceptance can prove to be the stepping stone to achieving meditation happiness. Happiness has always been an innate feeling. Since, it’s always with us on the inside; we can say that it secretly waits for us to be brought out and given the space to shine. Due to the competitive spirit that we are born with, we have certain goals that we set for ourselves for us to achieve. But there are people who have tasted success but are still empty inside. This simply tells us that success is not a parameter to define happiness. Sometimes accepting things as they are lets you be compassionate towards others.

To create meditation happiness, we can start be a simple yet important practice of deep breathing. Not just breathing but feeling the sensation of our own breath. This will make us feel booth relaxed and alive. This will also transport us from the mental banter to the present state of awareness. It will infuse more oxygen into the body, it goes without saying.

We should try listening to music more often. Select some piece of music that connects the soul with the positive energies. It can be an old song reminding us of the olden golden days or even an instrumental piece that just glides through the walls of the mind, body, heart and soul. Words don’t always have to be there to express emotions, do they?

Drawing, painting or just doodling with a pen on a piece of paper can also calm the nerves that the daily hullaballoo sends us. Other than relaxing the mind, it’s also a very easy practice and good if we wish to enhance visual memory. It really allows you escape like a deer into the dark forest, away from the sometimes overpowering leonine circumstances.

We also recommend tickling the funny bone by sitting before a TV and watching some fabulously written and timed comedies. If we wish to see an all time favorite, looking up YouTube is perhaps the best and easiest option.

Trust us; these simple ways to create meditation happiness will make a whole lot of difference.

Yoga Citta Vritti-Nirodhah – Yoga is the stilling of the mind Lake. Only when the Lake is Still and Calm can the beautiful jewel lying deep below be seen in all its glory. The jewel being the Atman or Pure Self. The Real You without the Mask.

To still the chatter of the mind is indeed an awesome task but it can be done. Yoga has a variety of methods with which to tame the unsteady mind and the undisciplined body. These include Asanas (Postures held over time) Pranayama (Breathing techniques) and Meditation practices. All of these work on both the physical and mental levels to bring back harmony and balance. They help make the body and mind strong and free from ‘dis-ease’ by influencing the internal systems such as the lymphatic, circulatory, endocrine and the central nervous system, which comprises the brain and spinal cord. Even the autonomic nervous system has been shown to respond to yogic techniques of relaxation, so that its sympathetic and parasympathetic branches are able to function efficiently rather than one going into overdrive or underdrive which results in feelings of stress, anxiety and many other modern day illnesses/allergies.

We do not need to know or understand these terms to feel the effects on our general well being. Just by practising yoga we begin to notice that the quality of our sleep and wakefulness improves. We have more energy, more joy in living in the present. Others begin to comment that we have ‘changed’. Perhaps the first signs of change may be a more toned body or a more relaxed attitude; An ability to communicate and get along better with others; A sense of fun. Deeper changes will come as you practise and your awareness deepens. Your changing perceptions may alter your values and purpose in life, which in turn may lead to different circles of friends and places, which will encourage further growth. You may choose not to go this deep as you will soon realise not everyone wants you to ‘change’ too much! It is your choice, your journey, your ‘Karma’.

So what exactly is Yoga? The word Yoga is from ‘Yug’ meaning to unite or form a spiritual union. If followed as a way of life it can lead to ‘self realization’ or ultimately to Samadhi which is a superconscious state where the meditator, the meditation process and the object of meditation become one: Union with ‘God’. However, Yoga is not a religion: it is a spiritual practice used by Christians, Jews, Buddhists and agnostics! There are many different paths offered to reach this ultimate goal and because of our different natures we are usually drawn more towards one.

Raja Yoga: The Royal Path. Has two major sub-divisions:

A. Patanjali, a sage in ancient India, describes the eight stepped path (Ashtanga means eight limbs). This way deals directly with the Mind.

Yamas (Restraints) Truth, non-violence, control of sexual energies, non-stealing, non-attachment.
Niyamas (Observances) Austerity, purity, self-study, contentment, surrender of the ego.
Asanas – Postures. This is the popular understanding of yoga e.g. the Lotus or Headstand.
Pranayama – Control and direction of a subtle life force which brings energy into the mind and body. Usually translated as breath control exercises but it is much more than this.
Pratyahara – Sense withdrawal
Dharana – Concentration on an internal or external object
Dhyana – Meditation..A Deeper state without any distractions
Samadhi – Absorbed in the Absolute. All sense of duality disappears. The last three stages are known as SAMYAMA.

B. Kundalini Yoga: Emphasises ‘pranayama’, works on purifying the ‘nadis’ (Astral tubes or energy centres) and seeks to awaken the Kundalini (spiritual energy coiled at the base of the spine). It describes the psychic system and also aims to still the mind. This is still a form of Raja yoga and follows the Ashtanga eight limbs; there is just a difference in emphasis and techniques.

Minor Sub-divisions include:

a. Hatha Yoga – where Asanas, Pranayamas, Mudras and Bandhas (energy seals and locks) and Kriyas (cleansing techniques) are taught to varying degrees. This is the most popular form of yoga in the West.
b. Nada yoga – uses music
c. Laya yoga – concentration on inner sounds and lights.
d. Mantra yoga – sacred sounds (sanskrit the holy language).
e. Yantra – geometrical forms and patterns to stimulate and induce meditation. N.B. In a Chakra meditation (Chakras are wheels of energy- light and colour) several techniques can be combined. e.g. Music, voice, colour.

Jnana Yoga: The Philosophical Path. Using Viveka (Discrimination) and Vairagya (Dispassion) one seeks to lift Maya or illusion and thus ‘see’ the world as it really is. Deep study of the Vedas (Metaphysical texts) and self-enquiry. Requires a sharp intellect.

Karma Yoga: The Action Path. Service without thought of reward. Followed by those who wish to follow an active path and remain working in the world as part of a community. They seek unity within diversity.

Bhakti Path: Devotional Path. Creative, emotional individuals who sublimate their feelings through yoga techniques and turn them into pure devotion. ‘God’ is seen in all beings. This path uses Mantras, chanting, meditation. The paths are therefore distinct from the teaching styles and schools, which you will encounter when you seek out a teacher or book. Most teaching in the West follows the Hatha Yoga path – the yoga that begins with physical bodywork.

Four of the main schools are:

Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga. Made popular by Sting, Madonna etc… This style was developed by K. Pattabhi Jois and is a flowing, strong and powerful workout. You need to be fit before you start unless you are lucky enough to find a good teacher who will take you in stages.
Iyengar teachers follow B K S Iyengar’s method of attention to alignment. They use a lot of standing poses to build strength initially. They also use props such as belts and blocks, chairs and walls.
Viniyoga teachers follow T K V Desikachar and offer individual and small group work with partner sequences. They emphasise step by step progression with awareness of the breath. These three teaching methods all derive from the three students of Sri Krishnamacharya (A revered guru who lived in south India). The last one was his son!
Sivananda teachers follow the teachings of Swami Sivananda and his disciple Vishnu-Devananda who brought this type of yoga to the West. It teaches twelve basic postures following the Rishikesh sequence, some breathing techniques and has a more spiritual leaning with the use of sanskrit chants.

Some teachers dip into and learn from several schools and from their own introspection. Do not be put off by all these different routes. Find a class and just try it or buy a Book, CD or Video. We live in an age where we have access to so many ‘gurus’ (one who can lead you out of the darkness). They do not have to be a person we follow blindly. We can listen to our inner voice, read, explore. The story of how Krishna gave yoga to the world is told in the Bhagavad Gita. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali which offer true insight into the workings of the mind and how to still it for a peaceful life, are available with commentaries by many different authors to explain their meanings. The Chief text devoted to Hatha Yoga is the Hatha Yoga Pradipika – it means Light on Hatha Yoga and it describes the techniques of Kriyas, Pranayamas, Mudras/Bandhas and Asanas. It also recommends a ‘Nutritious and Moderate diet’. If you want to read something lighter as a general introduction, try Yoga Mind and Body by the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre. Pub. Dorling Kindersley. I also recommend any works by J. Krishnamurti; especially Meeting Life. Pub. Arkana.

CDs are available from the yogawise site which provide a good introduction and practise for those interested in exploring further although finding a teacher and going on a deep retreat is even better. Do not be afraid to try Yoga. I have students who range from 7 to 75 years who come in all shapes and sizes; all levels of ability. Yogis measure age on the number of breaths we take in a lifetime and the flexiblity of our spines! Most yogis look ten years younger than their chronological age. Keep trying until you find a way to bring yoga into your life. You will never regret it. Om shanti shanti shanti Peace from within Peace from outside Peace from all living beings

Sweating is a part of a person’s natural body mechanisms and is a way for the body to regulate its internal temperature. There are many ways to control sweating and we discuss only a few methods in this article. The nerves that control sweating depend upon a chemical transmitter called acetylcholine which is a molecule produced at the very ends of the nerve fibers. Individuals troubled by excessive sweating often do not respond adequately to antiperspirants, and they may not respond to (or be willing to tolerate) systemic medications, electrical treatments on the areas of excessive sweating, permanent destruction of the nerves which control sweating, or surgery (in the armpits) to either scrape away the sweat glands or to cut out the areas of excessive sweating.

Drugs taken by mouth, such as phenoxybenzamine and propantheline, sometimes control sweating, and injections of botulinum toxin into the affected area diminish sweating. Botox can be used to control sweating of the underarms, hands, feet, forehead, and other body areas. The most common option used to control sweating is to use an antiperspirant. Modifying your behavior and your psychological environment (at home and at work) to lessen excessive stress will help you to control sweating. Meditation is the best way to control sweating if not cures it completely. It is hoped that as more is learnt about the systems in the body that control sweating, better ways of controlling it will be found.

Condition

It is a condition that affects both men and women and usually begins during childhood or at puberty, but improves spontaneously for many people in their mid-twenties or early thirties. Profuse sweating that occurs at times other than in hot conditions or after exercise is usually due to a rare disorder called hyperhidrosis, marked by perspiration produced in abundance by overactive sweat glands. In addition, it may be helpful for you to avoid conditions of excess heat, and stay clear of diets that are too high in sugar, caffeine and alcohol, because all of these may also contribute to your problem of sweating.

Control

The reason why some people sweat more is not yet known, but it is known that sweating is controlled by the Sympathetic Nervous System. Get your nerves under control and your sweating will diminish. Most of the times you don’t want to stop you’re sweating; you want to control it from getting out of hand. Excessive sweating can be controlled to some degree with commercial antiperspirants. It seems that gel deodorants (Mitchum/Soft & Dry) are the only products that will control sweating, the odor for more than one hour (not long enough). While a deodorant masks odors, antiperspirants actually reduce and control the perspiration and sweating. Conventional antiperspirants contain ingredients like aluminum chloride and aluminum chlorohydrate to control sweating by plugging up your sweat glands. Check the label; you’d be surprised at how many people think they’re using an antiperspirant/deodorant, a product to help stop you from sweating, but are actually using only a deodorant, a product that only helps prevent odor–not control sweating.

Botox, the popular injectable wrinkle remedy, also can be used to control sweating; injected into the skin, it temporarily paralyzes the sweat glands in the treated area. If drugs are not effective, a more drastic measure to control severe sweating is surgical cutting of the nerves leading to the sweat glands. These nerves respond to different kinds of stress: emotional stress like intimate social situations or public speaking, or physical stress like the increased body temperature that comes with exercise or hot and humid weather. Inspirational books, soothing music, scented candles or bubble baths; anything that helps you to relieve stress is ideal for you to control sweating. Proper hygiene plays an important role in helping you control excessive sweating.

Treatments

While only a doctor can prescribe or perform certain hyperhidrosis treatments, there are things you can do to help make excessive sweating less of a burden on your everyday life: bathe daily to keep the amount of bacteria on your skin in check. Stress is known to enhance sweating and it would help you if you take regular distressing treatments. Once you have received your treatments from the dermatologist you can purchase the equipment to give yourself treatments at home from that point on. To me it makes sense to start with the easiest thing and work your way up to the harder, more intensive treatments if you don’t get results. Frequent treatments are usually necessary to control sweating. Bring the questions and your answers to your next doctor’s appointment, or use them as evidence of the seriousness of your condition if you need to convince your health insurance plan to cover your treatments.

Excessive sweating can be treated by: simple treatments, such as roll-on antiperspirants (e.g. driclor); a type of electrolysis (called iontophoresis); medication, e.g. beta blockers or probanthine; injection of botulinum toxin; surgery (sympathectomy). Simple or medical treatments of excessive sweating might not control the symptoms, or they might induce intolerable side effects. Consult a neurosurgeon if sympathectomy is necessary in severe cases of hyperhidrosis that are refractory to all other treatments. The treatments available are still far from perfect but do give hyperhidrosis sufferers an alternative to just putting up with the condition. Non-surgical treatments include medications, Botox for palm sweating, anti-perspirant, and iontophoresis. A number of different treatments and products are available to help people with severe underarm sweating. If you are suffering from excessive sweating problem, then make sure that you bathe daily and couple this habit with any other method you’ll use to control sweating.

Antiperspirants are known to control sweating to an extent and its effect depends on how bad your case of excessive sweating is. A fan or an air conditioner will definitely help you to control sweating. In some patients, these symptoms require therapeutic intervention such as dose reduction, antidepressant substitution, antidepressant discontinuation, or addition of an agent to control sweating. The researchers in this study think that sage may work to control sweating because it has astringent properties. Could an anti-perspirant (such as Drysol) be used on the forehead to control sweating. Destroying the nerves that control sweating in the feet also affects sexual responses, a price that many would think too high to pay. For the feet, aluminum chlorohydrate-containing antiperspirant sprayed onto the skin can help to control sweating. However, there are a number of different things that you can do in order to naturally reduce or control sweating. There are many natural ways and also many counter products that claim and do help to control sweating.

Rastafarianism is a religious movement born out of the black slums of Jamaica which harnessed the teachings of the Jamaican born black nationalist, Marcus Garvey and conditionally uses selective Old Testament Christian writings to support its teachings and practices. Born in 1887, Garvey’s influence on the poor black slave descendants in Jamaica came to its peak in the 1920’s where his message of encouragement and calling on black people to take pride in themselves won some fanatical supporters. Although historically Marcus Garvey was a political leader interested in making the black race economically equal with the white, in oral tradition he has become a divinely anointed prophet.

With the crowning of Ras Tafari Makonnen on November 2nd 1930 in Ethiopia, many believed Garvey’s prediction of a black king crowned in Africa who would be a redeemer and liberator of the dispossessed black race had come to fruition. Makonnen claimed for himself the titles of “Emperor Haile Selassie I, Conquering lion of the tribe of Judah, Elect of God and King of the kings of Ethiopia.” Ethiopia holds great significance to Rastafaris who believe in a coming judgement day when the righteous will be called home to Mount Zion (identified with Africa) to live forever in peace and harmony. Marcus Garvey, although no admirer of Haile Selassie, as he observed that slavery still existed in Ethiopia, continued to be revered by the fanatical Rastafarians despite being a Roman Catholic by birth who never spoke out explicitly to support the growing movement.

Without centralised organisation, any one definitive text, official buildings or a recognisable and ongoing office of leader the religion is difficult to categorise. This results in a wide variety of beliefs and practices coming under the general umbrella of Rastafarianism that often result from individual interpretations. There are however some notable characteristics as covered below.

Distinguishing it from other groups and religions which stress conformity to the powers that be, here it is the individual which is important. Individuals follow a path to truth for themselves and reject the power of modern, oppressive white society (“Babylon”) which is seen to be rebelling against God, the “Earth’s Rightful Ruler” called “JAH”. JAH is within all individuals and all individuals are connected to God. This is reflected in the often used phrase “I and I” when referring to oneself.

One early leader of the movement in Jamaica was Leonard Howell, who was arrested by the Jamaican government in 1933 for preaching a ‘revolutionary doctrine’. Howell established the first commune of Rastafari and six principles of Rastafari which have changed little over the years: 1) a hatred for the white race, 2) the complete superiority of the black race, 3) revenge on the wickedness of white peoples, 4) the negation, persecution and humiliation of the government and legal bodies of Jamaica, 5) preparation to return to Africa, and 6) acknowledging Emperor Haile Salassie as the supreme being and only ruler of black people.

Even though he helped to shape the movement’s ideas, his arrest is also thought to have a large influence on the movement’s organisational structure. The prolonged police harassment that Howell was subjected to is thought to be the main reason why Rastafarians have decided to remain leaderless.

In 1954 the situation grew increasingly tense as the Jamaican government intervened and overran the now Rastafarian mini-state called the Pinnacle that Howell ruled over. After this many followers migrated out of the original rural setting to the ghettos and slums of Kingston. Although authentic Elders advocate non-violence in their teachings, a frustrated and desperate few incited confrontation with authorities which resulted in deadly shoot-outs with British troops in the late ’50s and early ’60s bringing some negative worldwide attention to the movement.

From the mid 1970s to the present has seen a phenomenal growth in the Rastafarian Movement, namely down to the worldwide exposure and acceptance of reggae music. This is mainly attributed to Bob Marley who as a musical artist was also a prophet of Rastafarianism whose lyrics often touch on themes relevant to Rasta doctrine. The reggae movement was initially attractive to the Caribbean black youths, many of whom saw it as an extension of their adolescent rebellion from school and parental authority. With the migration of Caribbean families to England and America, thus the music spread and became popular, along with a certain other botanical Jamaican export.

Some followers choose to classify the religion as Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity (distinguishing it from Catholic and Protestant Christianity) or even Judaism. In the latter case the belief is held that black people are descended from the twelve tribes of Israel, and that black Jews have lived in Ethiopia for centuries, disconnected from the rest of Judaism. This and other ideas result from interpretation of Bible translations, which are also thought to be incomplete and have been distorted by white oppressors over time.

One of the more obvious symbols of the Rastafarians are the dreadlocks on a Rasta’s head. They are said to represent the Lion of Judah and are in contrast to the straight, blond look of the white man and the establishment and in response to interpretations of passages from Leviticus 2 in the Bible.

Another major symbol of Rastafarians are colours, specifically red, gold and green. These were taken from the Garvey movement and form the background of the Ethiopian flag. Red stands for the Rasta Church Triumphant but also the blood of the martyrs of Rasta. The green represents the beauty and vegetation of Ethiopia, the promised land, and the gold symbolises the wealth of the homeland that shall be regained.

The true Rasta also only eats I-tal food. This is special food which never touches chemicals, is natural and not from cans. The food is cooked but served in the rawest form possible, without salts, preservatives, or condiments. Rastafarians are therefore vegetarians. Drink is anything herbal, such as tea and not unnatural such as liquor, milk, coffee and soft drinks.

Marijuana or Ganja is commonly smoked in a ritualised form and as medicine and is not officially advocated for recreational use. It is believed to aid understanding and meditation and is claimed to be the ‘holy’ or ‘green’ herb mentioned in some translations of the Bible.

Today the worldwide following of Rastafari is believed to be in the region of 1,000,000, with official branches in many countries including England, Canada, the Caribbean islands and America. Some sources claim that six out of ten Jamaicans are believed to be Rastafarians or Rastafarian sympathisers with more conservative estimates stating that five to ten percent of Jamaicans are Rasta.
