For people who find it hard to do personal meditation, guided meditation can prove to be a perfect alternative. It is a kind of meditation that involves getting pointers from a meditation partner to achieve a state of relaxation.

There are several types of guided meditations. Some involve the partner telling a relaxing story to the other person. Others would require the partner to give out instructions to the other person to help him or her reach a calm state. However, there are some general reminders in doing guided meditation.

In most cases, guided meditation is best performed in the morning or evening. During these times, the surroundings are most quiet. For people who want to get into the practice quicker, twice a day meditation may prove to be helpful. Likewise, to make the environment more peaceful, relaxing music can be played. Scented incense sticks can also be lit to freshen the air.

Second, in choosing a partner, it would be best to choose someone from the opposite gender. Because the whole process involves the partner talking to the person doing the meditation, it would also be best to choose someone who has a soft and pleasing voice.

Before the guided meditation process starts, the partners should start focusing on their breathing. This could be better achieved with the partners sitting in front of each other and in an upright position.

Once prepared, the guiding partner can start assisting the other person to focus on a certain element. The best example would be a ball of bright light shining on the other person like a sun. It is a symbol of healing for most people. Next, the partner should try to make the other person feel the element in focus. In this case, the bright light can be imagined to penetrate the body of the other person. This way, the healing warmth can more likely be felt. Once the partner is already able to feel the focus element, other elements, such as color, can be put into the picture.

The length of guided meditation depends on the way the partners relate to each other. Once the guide feels that the other person has already reached a relaxed state, he or she can slowly divert that person’s attention to the present environment again.

Insomnia, being very prevalent and affecting our lives in many ways, has numerous promising treatments for those who suffer with this condition. There are pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for insomnia. We will explore three non-pharmacological treatments and discuss why these treatments might be more effective in the long-term. We will explain, in detail, these three different types of non-pharmacological treatments as we define or describe each of them. You do not have to suffer any longer with insomnia; there are treatments available to you without taking medications.

Once you know the cause of your insomnia, there are therapies available to you long before your insomnia progresses to the point it has a negative effect on your life. The main focal point in treating and curing insomnia is to find the cause of your insomnia. Once identified insomnia is often eliminated when those triggers, that keep you awake at night, are removed. The success rate of curing your insomnia increases when the source for your insomnia is addressed. Whether you cure your insomnia or not, you can treat your insomnia, with the methods explored in this article, before your insomnia gets out of hand.

Educating yourself is the key to a good night sleep. Knowing how your body responds to certain stimuli, such as a large meal just before bed, offers you information so you can adjust your behavior. Becoming aware of what your natural rhythms are and what sleeping habits work, or do not work, for you is valuable information which allows you to alter what you do? The more you know about what keeps you awake at night the better chance of curing your insomnia and getting that rest you need.

Although prescribed sleeping medications are available, non-pharmacological therapies have an advantage even though some might say both therapies are equally effective especially when used together. Often times, after taking a medication for a period of time, intolerance develops to that medication. That medication is no longer as effective as it was, and the condition will return without another medication being prescribed. Another disadvantage to prescribed medications is a person can become dependent on that medication and once discontinued they can have a withdrawal effect. Non-pharmacological treatments improve your insomnia, and have a longer lasting effect. It is for the above reasons that non-pharmacological therapies have the upper hand in curing insomnia.

Non-pharmacological therapies include a variety of effective methods to aid you in curing your insomnia. The treatments are forms of cognitive behavioral therapy, also known as cognitive therapy or behavioral therapy. The whole goal, of these types of treatments, are for you to become aware of what you are thinking and how you behave, as it relates to sleep, so you sleep well again. This effective form of treatment teaches you new ways of thinking and behaving, regarding your sleeping patterns, and has a longer lasting effect for insomnia than taking medication.

Included in the list of non-pharmacological therapies, for insomnia, are several effective modalities that we will investigate in detail. Three of these modalities, explored in this article, include muscle relaxation, stimulus control, and sleep restriction. There are other modalities for treating insomnia that will be explored in a later article. These three non-pharmacological therapies can be effective in treating your insomnia.

One such modality is using relaxation as a method to calm the body and quite the mind. One way to use the relaxation modality is through meditation. Meditation can be used in a variety of ways and one simple way to use meditation is to sit in a comfortable position and focus on your breath as you inhale and exhale. You can use imagery to help you achieve relaxation by imaging you are somewhere calming to you like a factitious place, a place you have been before or a place you would like to go provided you feel tranquil there. A second way to use meditation to relax is using a meditation tape/CD, with calming music that allows you to unwind and relax. If you have difficulty achieving relaxation on your own, a third method is a guided relaxation tape/CD where someone is taking you through a relaxation session. Whether you use a guided meditation tape or not, this relaxation technique suggests you relax one area of your body at a time. While in a comfortable position, gently tighten, without creating pain, the muscles in one area of your body and hold these tighten muscles for a few seconds and then relax the muscles. While maintaining relaxation to the original area, continue focusing on a new area until you have relaxed every part of your body. It does not matter what area of your body you begin with however, make sure you are able to go to the next part of your body without much thought. An example of moving to the next part of your body without much thought is to begin at the top of your head and go down to your toes or begin at your toes and go up to your head. You can also quite your mind, while using this form of relaxation, by not allowing your mind to focus on anything else while you relax your body. Relaxation therapy is useful in quieting the mind and relaxing the body in order to achieve sleep.

A second modality for achieving a better night sleep is stimulus control. Stimulus control has many facets, however, the theory of stimulus control is your bed is for sleeping and sex activity and nothing more. Watching TV, reading the newspaper or a book, doing any kind of work or eating, while in bed, is counterproductive to getting a good night sleep. Another facet of stimulus control is the idea that you go to bed only when you are tired and if you do not fall asleep within 20 minutes then get up and do something else until you are tired as long as what you are doing is calming. Avoiding taking long naps, during the day, is another facet to stimulus control. Naps that are 10 to 20 minutes long can be invigorating while longer naps during the day affect how much sleep you need at night. Still another aspect of stimulus control is to get up at the same time every day, including Saturday and Sunday, regardless of how many hours of sleep you had. To accomplish this goal, you might have to set an alarm clock to wake you up at the same time every day, provided you do not hit the snooze button. Sleeping longer then your usually time to get up will decrease the effectiveness of stimulus control. Stimulus control limits the time you are awake in bed and this method helps you relearn your bed is for sleep and sexual activity only.

A third modality for achieving a better night sleep is sleep restriction. This third method may sound similar to stimulus control however, sleep restriction limits the amount of time you are in bed down to 4 to 5 hours of sleep a night. The amount of time you are in bed is based on taking the average of the time you sleep, while in bed, and set the time you go to bed and the time you get up accordingly. Basically, sleep restriction deprives you of some sleep for one night so you are more tired the following night and the sleep you do get is more quality sleep. Sleep restriction needs to be used cautiously meaning sleep deprivation has a diminishing effect on a person and their ability to function during the day. The recommendation is for to you get at least 7 hours of sleep again before you engage in activities that require your full attention such as driving or operating machinery. You are the only person who can determine whether you feel safe enough to reintroduce these more demanding activities. Keeping this schedule of sleep and forcing yourself to get out of bed, at the designed time, even when you are still tired allows you the time you sleep is quality sleep. When your quality of sleep improves, you can slowly increase the time you are in bed actually sleeping. Sleep restriction, a method by which you restrict the amount of sleep you get a night, has helped some people who suffer from insomnia and needs to be used with awareness of what works best for you.

There are several avenues available to you to help you get a better night sleep and the three we explored in this article are relaxation, stimulus control and sleep restriction. These three methods of treating insomnia assist you in becoming more aware of what works and what does not work for you in relationship to getting quality sleep. The key to getting the sleep you need is to educate yourself about what is keeping you awake at night, what are the methods that are effective for you and how does your body respond to the stimuli in your life. Each of these non-pharmacological methods are more effective and longer lasting than medications. These three methods, of treating insomnia, only require you to learn the method and be willing to use that method in a way that benefits you. The main focal point to treating and curing insomnia, as discussed in the second paragraph, is to find the cause of your insomnia. Finally, you can treat your insomnia with these three methods however, curing your insomnia requires deeper personal work on the cause of your insomnia. It is possible to eliminate insomnia all together and sleep well again.

Integrating a spirit of joy and enthusiasm (positive attitude) in your actions leads to creative power in your goal achievement. Negative energy weighs heavily, positive energy has the ability to energize and motivate. It is your mood and mind-set that makes the difference regarding the energy you emanate. Choosing to bring forth thoughts of joy and enthusiasm will compel you to feel lighter, and you become more inspired to give your best effort to your goals.

Since each task you perform becomes imprinted with your energy, you can further your goals by consciously approaching them with a positive attitude. This ultimately leads to powerful creative energy to the outcome you desire. Your goals can take on a new level of energy and excitement if you embrace thoughts of joy, enthusiasm and allow them to integrate into your activities.

Since your mood fuels your energy, you might want to set aside time to enjoy activities that compel you to feel happy and enhance your feelings of joy and enthusiasm. Focus on the happiness and enthusiasm you feel, and visualize it growing larger and larger until it spreads into every facet of your being. Then you can simply choose a goal to focus on and allow your joy and enthusiasm to carry you throughout accomplishing the task.

The following tips will assist you in developing a positive attitude.

” Listen to your inner dialogue. Keep a log for a few days, write in the left side of a note pad all the negative thoughts that you hear yourself say. Rewrite each thought in a positive way on the right side. Practice doing this in your mind until positive thinking becomes a habit. (Example, “I’ll never get this finished day!” Change to: “I will finish most of this today, and I can finish it tomorrow.”)

” Connect to your spirituality. Research has shown that those who connect to their spirituality live longer, more satisfying lives. The secret is to practice your spiritual beliefs, either through organized spiritual associations, meditation or connecting with like minded people.

” Allow yourself to love and be loved. The ability to love and be loved is the most basic human need. We have become disconnected from this basic need – fear-based emotions (depression, loneliness, anxiety, guilt and anger) are the symptoms. Find ways to reconnect with others is extremely helpful in developing a positive attitude.

” Laugh and find humor in the simple things. Laughter is a powerful mood elevator. If you are feeling down, read some jokes, watch a funny movie or just act “silly.” See the world through a child’s eyes.

” Let go of your “emotional baggage” that holds you back from true enlightenment. All that you require is already within you, so avoid giving your power away by blindly following others. Trust in the goodness that resides within your heart. If you have difficulty letting go of your ’emotional baggage,’ or feel ‘blocked’ engage with a hypnotherapist/holistic practitioner.

” Learn to communicate effectively. Not saying the things you feel leads to a sense of frustration, hurt, anger or anxiety. If you find communicating difficult, take an assertive communications course.

” Plan leisure and socializing. Reconnect with friends or make new friends, take the dog for a walk, visit an art gallery or listen to your favorite music. Enjoy a long, relaxing bath, read a book, tell your child a story, or ask an older relative to tell you about their life. It is the simple things in life that give us the most pleasure.

” Offer your assistance. A simple act of helping others compels us to feel good. Help a neighbor, volunteer for a cause or organization. Contact non-profit organizations and volunteer your time and expertise.

” Engage in new physical and mental activities to improve confidence and learn new skills. Learn new words or new topics to build confidence. Learn and follow the principles of holistic health – better nutrition and exercise helps improve mood and attitude.

” Stop listening to the news. Mainstream media focuses on drama–fear, negative thoughts and emotion. If you think your life will be in jeopardy if you do not know the latest breaking news, test your theory by not listening to the news for two weeks. Notice if your life is negatively impacted by not hearing the news. Think about it, has the news prevented anything? No! They dramatize the event after the fact.

Does the weather man really compel you to carry an umbrella or wear a warm coat? Carry an umbrella in your car and brief case, then you are equipped for any weather. After not watching the news, my hunch is that you will notice that you are feeling calmer, less frustrated and more at peace. When you feel calm, less frustration and more at peace you can manifest a positive attitude more easily.

Sherrill Brown once said, “It costs to be stupid. The stupider you are, the more it costs”.

A few years ago I studied the various types of ‘intelligences’ people have.

Here are just a few. There’s physical, musical, mathematical, spiritual and even entrepreneurial intelligence.

All of these are recognised as intelligences most of us can acquire.

But it takes work.

You have to learn to dance, to play guitar, to meditate and so on.

All of which can take years of hard study.

Have you ever wondered as I have, what makes the difference between a high earning copywriter and an average copywriter?

Is it in fact their level of intelligence?

Do they have a higher copywriting IQ?

Well, one thing’s for sure, they all studied for years.

And they all studied the masters.

Clayton Makepeace is said to be the highest paid copywriter in America.

And he’s been writing for some thirty five years or more.

The world’s best copywriter, Gary Bencivenga started over forty years ago.

Now, I don’t know how long you’ve been writing. Probably less than these two writers.

I’m certain they learned from every other good writer past or present.

And it took them YEARS to get to where they are today… earning the big bucks.

Traditional learning does take a VERY long time.

However, did you know another one of the world’s greatest copywriters, Eugene Schwartz, promoted what is now known as accelerated learning?

And did you know one of his client’s was the world memory expert Harry Lorayne?

The headline he wrote for him was “I’ll make you a mental wizard in one evening!”

In another advert he wrote promoting his own book, the headline read…

“You are twice as smart as you think!”

The book shows you how to double your power to learn.

What would it mean if you could double your power to learn? Or even better, treble it?

How much sooner would you be making the bigger bucks?

What would you do when you’re making more than you could possibly spend?

Where would you live?

What kind of car would you drive?

Where would you go on holiday?

Imagine you’re making one hundred thousand more than you’re making right now.

Isn’t that what you’re looking for?

The lifestyle of the wealthy IS within the grasp of all smart copywriters.

And it need not take years to get smart.

With the latest breakthroughs in accelerated learning you can soon be earning far more than you are today.

Plus you’ll write better copy easier and faster.

In copywriting it really costs to be stupid. That cost can be in the millions.

Or you can be one of the smart copywriters and make the millions.

To make accelerated learning work for you all you do is this.

Find a well written letter and copy it by hand ten times.

And watch as your copywriting IQ increases dramatically.

Does it get any easier than this?

Yes, here’s how.

There are a lot of different ways how to manage your anxiety problems that would eventually lead to hunger pangs and stress eating. They are simple yet effective answers to your issues of stress management to fight emotional eating.

1. Love yourself; feel better about YOU. To lower the stress level, there are many ways to start with. These are proper breathing, physical exercise, meditation, music, yoga, journaling, and having a constructive perspective in life and the sense of humor to see the brighter side of life.

2. Sustain yourself; care for yourself. Tension would somehow divert us from taking care of ourselves. To take care of ourselves, we must develop healthy eating habits, good nutrition, productive hobbies and interests, and good sleeping habits.

3. Having the right attitude is a great start. The apprehension we feel is quite parallel to the attitude we develop and our perspective in life. The important ways to relieve bad attitudes affecting our health are having optimism and positive affirmations, choosing to be happy, letting go of anger, and learning to have fun.

4. Having a stress-free place is a must. The environment we are in creates a big impact on the attitude we have that battle emotional adversity. De-clutter your house, maintain a positive energy, and try music and aromatherapy to have a soothing atmosphere that would help chase away your problems.

5. Master healthy habits. There are certain pointers on how to easily manage stress that would effectively settle our eating disorders. These are morning habits, better sleep, and choosing and maintaining the right habits to consistently help us bounce back.

6. Deal with your issues. Your own support system is vital in avoiding the temptation of stress eating. Reaching out to others is a good diversion to start with.

7. Learn how to face your cravings. Giving in to food cravings could make or break your efforts to fight this obsessive habit. Know when would be the right time to indulge.

8. Have a total approach to wellness. To be anxious is normal. Yet, our approach to combating anxiety is important in avoiding the effects that it may lead us to.

Brainwave Entrainment Spirituality and Ritual

Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.
buddhist meditation music | basic meditation
Ritual is part of life. Whether or not you participate in rituals for religious or spiritual reasons, your life is filled with routines that may be called rituals.

Maybe your family sits in certain seats at the dining table. Maybe laundry gets sorted a particular way. You probably always dress yourself putting your pants on the same leg first, etc. You can look at your life and find routines that you do the same way every time.

People getting in touch with their spirituality use ritual to move them to the space where they connect with their spirit. Mediation serves as a means for getting in touch with one’s Spirit and making contact with the Source of All-That-Is, God, Creator-whatever term you use.

The ritual does not serve as the end but the beginning of that connection process. Some people need a mediation space, perhaps an altar. They may use special music or sit in specific positions. Some people use musical instruments to signal their Higher Self or their subconscious that they are about to move into a prayer space.

Rituals allow the transition from every day life into the sacred space to happen more easily and smoothly. Certain breathing techniques cause brainwave patterns to start to facilitate mediation and connection that happens when people go within to their own center.

The point of the ritual is preparation. The act of praying is the goal.

What is prayer? Many people think prayer means supplication, “God please do this for me.” Some try to make bargains with words like, ‘”God, let me do XYZ and I will do ABC for you-or someone else.”

The Universe does not bargain, nor does it evaluate or pass judgments. The Creator simply provides whatever the person asks for-providing the message comes in a clear request without countering emotions that cancel it out.

Someone who asks for more money then spends the rest of the day thinking about poverty or being unable to pay their bills cancels out the request for money. The Universe can only supply what it knows you clearly want. Then it always provides it-so long as it is in your highest and best interest. Even then, it will deliver it at the time that is best for you. Your timing may differ from that of God.

Here is the point most people do not know-the Universe responds to emotions and feelings. Requests that come as emotional expressions get fulfilled right away. That is why most people live in ways they do not want. They think about and worry about things they want out of their lives. The Universe just knows how they feel and brings them more of how they feel.

Get a clue here. Feel happy to get more of what lets you feel happy. The true prayer s one of knowing your desired outcomes already exists and you feel and experience all the feelings and deep emotions of living with your request already being real in your life.

An example may help clarify my point. If you want a bountiful garden harvest then prepare the soil. Sow the seeds and nourish the garden right from the start.

The prayer would be your feeling a full stomach, enjoying optimal health and licking your lips as you enjoy succulent vegetables and fruit. You would taste the sweet tastes and feel the texture in your mouth of your favorite produce. You would smile and share the enjoyment of what you grew.

You spend your time in the place of already having harvested a bounty from your garden-and the Universe will make that virtual experience real.

Make sense? You create your world-I mean you really create your world in your mind first and in your emotions and experience. Then your experience becomes real in the three dimensional world.

Ritual prepares the mind and body for the prayer that delivers what you want in life.
Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain? ?requency following?response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

This ?requency following?response of brainwave entrainment can be seen in action with those prone to epilepsy. If a strobe flashes at their seizure frequency, the brain will ?ntrain?to the flashing light, resulting in a seizure.

On the positive side, this same mechanism is commonly used to induce many brainwave states; such as a trance, enhanced focus, relaxation, meditation or sleep induction. The brainwave entrainment effectively pushes the entire brain into a certain state.

Brainwave entrainment works for almost everyone. It is a great way to lead your mind into states that you might usually have difficulty reaching, allowing you to experience what those states feel like.

THE HYPE
There is a lot of marketing hype around brainwave entrainment. It is sold with promises of increasing IQ, promoting weight loss, ?ind-tripping? enhancing creativity, concentration, inducing spiritual states and more.

While these claims are not entirely true, they are not altogether false either. In practice, the claims are based on an overly-simplistic view of how the brain and the brainwaves function.
THE RUB
People are very seldom deficient in a certain brainwave type in all areas of their brain. Usually the distribution is much spottier, with an excess in one area and a deficiency in another.

We are all different, especially when it comes to the distribution of our brainwaves. Boosting a certain brainwave state may be beneficial for one person, and emotionally uncomfortable for another. Without knowing each person? starting position, entrainment can be rather ?it and miss?

If brainwave entrainment leaves you with unwanted side-effects (see below) or discomfort, you?e probably encouraging a range of brainwaves that are already excessive in some area of your brain. The way around this is to get a brain map to see what your brain? strengths and weaknesses are, and see what (if any) brainwaves could use some encouragement.

So, here’s the deal.

Our brains are like massive antennas, absorbing all the frequencies that the world puts out on a daily basis. Car alarms, dumptrucks, chainsaws, weed-whackers, noisy kids, nosy old ladies, bosses who don’t listen, coworkers who constantly interrupt you as you’re speaking, rainy days, love handles, bad coffee, chunky milk — each of these can leave a lasting mark on your being. Ever catch yourself grumbling after you realize you’ve been sipping on a chunky latte for the past 15 minutes? That grumbling is your body’s way of embracing negative emotions. These stick around, build up, little by little, until you end up on the news with ten cameras and twenty cops coaxing you to come down from the water tower and just give in. But do you? No, you stay up on that water tower, and probably end up killing yourself, all because Todd in Accounting wouldn’t let you get a friggin’ word in edge-wise.

This doesn’t have to be the case. While it’s impossible to remove all daily stresses, short of moving to the mountains and living in a cave, it is possible to increase your body’s capacity to handle the negative, and that’s where Binaural Brainwave Meditation comes in. You just slip on a pair of headphones, and listen to the sounds of nature as the near-inaudible binaural beats cause your brain to slip out of its normal mode of operation and into a slightly different, slightly more effective state of awareness.

You start off lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, wondering what it is that you’re doing. You start hearing the sound of the rain, and realize that you’re in your room listening to the sounds of the rain. You begin to become at ease, your body relaxes, your eyes begin to close naturally. Five minutes in, you start to notice a slight buzzing sound — this is the binaural technology kicking in. Your brain suddenly comes across this new pattern, and like a curious cat, it starts paying more and more attention to how the pattern is structured. Instead of a buzzing, you start to hear a hum, then a low tone, and eventually nothing, as you begin to realize that you are breathing at an extremely calm pace. Your awareness begins to expand, and you feel your feet, then the rest of your body, then a sense of peace begins to grow, and the program truly begins.

Each program has the ability, granted that you have the willingness, to take you on a different journey. Programs range from out-of-body awareness (believe me, this one is killer) to stress-reduction to auto-immune system boosters. The true key is whether or not you’re willing to put a little bit of faith into it, or, at the very least, enter with an open mind. Now, the last kick. This technology has a price to it. It is possible to go out and get free stuff, and believe me, I’ve tried it — the problem is that the quality is suffering, and free programs oftentimes are not tuned properly to bring your brain in and out of the proper range of frequencies. I’ve found a company who I fully support who has made the leap to bring this technology out into the open, at a reasonable price, with a no-nonsense money back guarantee if it doesn’t work for you. Settle your curiosity and embrace the now. Check out my signature for details. Try it, and good luck =)

Art isn’t an end in itself. It is a place to practice quieting the mind so that we may hear our Muse whispering to us. Writing, drawing, playing music, dancing, taking pictures, cooking, painting all bring us to the present moment. This is the same ‘zone’ as an athlete enters when they are fully vested in the game or the race or the downhill run. Yoga, meditation, mountain biking, and horseback riding can bring us to that place where all the extraneous thoughts are not heard and our senses are filled with what is in the moment. When we create, we are invited to enter this state. As long as we are here, the critic is less likely to stomp around in our thoughts.

Whenever I sit down to write, there invariably is a moment when thoughts flash through my mind of, ‘What do the readers want to read?’, ‘How can I make this different from anything else that is already in print?’, and ‘What would my mother think?’ Occasionally, as I’m writing, the critic slips in and tries to make the character do or say something that they wouldn’t do or say. I pause and breathe. The more attention we give to those thoughts, the longer we are derailed from our purpose of authentic creating.

That is not to say that the critic never has anything of value to add. Lay out several paintings, play different pieces of music, look at a series of photographs and notice what is consistent in each, what might be the strength and weakness in the set, and then see if there is maturity from the first piece to the last. This is the presence of the artist, their particular style, the mastery of a technique. This is when the critic can evaluate our art and offer, hopefully, feedback that is useful.

One hurdle creatives must overcome is the thought, given by the inner critic, that there should be no mistakes. A chef will burn a meal, a painter will use a color that distracts the eye in a piece, a writer or poet will use the passive voice or one synonym instead of another, a photographer will print a photograph with the incorrect white balance, and that is alright! These projects aren’t failures, but opportunities to decipher where it is we’re going. They let us know when we’ve stepped off the path. Not the path of creativity, but perhaps the path that we are on for that project. These detours, what some call mistakes, allow us to deviate into the unknown. It might work, it might not, or it might be something we come back to and revisit later.

A way to help us along our artist journey, and keep the critic quiet for a while, is by utilizing a sketchbook. Writers aren’t the only ones that could benefit from this practice. Jotting down ideas, sketching our thoughts or things we see during our daily rounds can be recorded in this one place. It doesn’t need to be an expensive journal, and shouldn’t be. Then we might believe that we shouldn’t make ‘mistakes’ in it, that what we record must be used in some future project. That isn’t the purpose. It is a place to capture thoughts and ideas, a messy kind of ‘office’ that we can return to for inspiration or direction.

When you see a clear river you’re less afraid to go out into its deep waters. It’s peaceful. You stay in it longer, and you even let your feet touch its bottom. Like a crystal clear river, a clear mind is the key to being at peace and living in the present moment. A mind filled with the murkiness of worry and haste is a confused and overloaded mind that will increase stress, lower productivity and lead the way to unhappiness and ill health. I have found that by painting intuitively, not only do I clear my mind, but I receive spiritual healing seated deep within my heart.

There are many ways to slow down and release our worries, to exist in the present moment and be at one with the creative flow. In other words, there are many ways to meditate. Meditation is a journey inward. When the mind dissolves and is free of all thoughts there is a connection at the heart of our spirit; there is a childlike joy in existing. This feeling of contentment helps us cope with the busyness of life and bonds us with a pure ocean of peace.

Whether we know it or not, all of us have meditated before. Maybe not in the eastern Yogic sense, but we have all silenced the mind perhaps by listening to gentle music, lying on the beach, or immersing ourselves in the stillness of a hobby. Being that I am an artist, I’ve retreated to the quiet places of painting and drawing pretty much my whole life. Sometimes, without any idea of what I would paint, I would allow my intuition to choose colors and begin forming free flowing lines that were both a connection of my spirit and a creative journey of intuitive oneness. It wasn’t until the past few years that I consciously became aware of my art as a form of meditation and connection to God.

And you don’t have to be an artist to practice intuitive art. Anyone can take part in using art as meditation. And if you do, over time you will find within the confines of the peace that you receive there is a spiritual connection in your act of creativity which is tied to God the Creator. After all, we are ourselves a creation with a will to create, and when we explore this gift we are living in acceptance, we are taking the time to remove our “self” to unfold a journey within the higher realms of light and love. When you feel this sense of well-being that God is within you and around you, like a proud father smiling at his son or daughter, you know that anything that brings you together must be right. You also know that the simple intuitive painting that you just embarked on, was really a spiritual and creative journey to happiness, to love, the place where God resides.

If you would like to try your hand (and heart) at an intuitive painting all you need is your willingness to try. Previous art experience is not needed to take part in a spiritual path of well-being. Remember, you’re not trying to create a masterpiece, your trying to master peace. Sit down with some old crayons, colored pencils, some watercolors, or whatever it is that you like. If you like rich colors try acrylic paints or oil pastels. You will also need many blank pieces of fresh paper or canvas.

Just as when you were a child, go into the act with not a care in the world. Without forming the idea of what to paint, begin by choosing a color. Allow yourself to visit different colors and the way they appear on the paper. Create forms if you want. Take delight in what you do and allow your instincts to take over. Sometimes it helps to play some soft harmonious music in the background. Each painting is an exploration in your own spiritual journey. You will find that some take you to a place where you are connected and are extremely satisfied in the art that is unfolding before you. Without being judgmental, continue in the flow. You will be amazed with what you find, and you will be delighted when others appreciate your paintings as well.
